I've done similar stunts with the outside jacket of parachute cord for 
'phone cords etc.  Pull out the guts, and push a long length of stiff 
wire through the appropriate length.  Put one end in a vise.  Solder the 
smaller wires to the other end and slide the jacket off the stiff wire.

I suspect parachute cord and shoe laces are not big enough for the guy 
who started this thread.  Try the craft and sewing shops for other 
braided things.
