[Boatanchors] On topic again - BA antenna question

I have a bit of experience with a Hustler 5BTV over poor
ground using a Globe King 500A. It works, but not very
efficient. I added 4 radials for each low band and 2 for
each upper band and just barely did OK, but that is it.

Given all I know about antennas, I can't see how a "ground
independent", electrical 1/4 wave antenna would work without
radials unless it is an electrical 1/2 wave dipole turned
vertical. Is that what the R8 is?

The really bad thing about these types of antennas is
bandwidth.
