Yes, it did crack on its own. I think the actual mechanism was "stress
corrosion cracking" due to internal stresses as Drew mentioned. Deep
drawing causes extreme stresses, it's not uncommon. Most SX-28 meters I've
ever seen were that way, plus some others.
