Bob,

The 51J/388 precipitated a military requirement for a more elaborate 
version of the receiver with with mechanical digital tuning etc., called 
the R-390.  This was followed by an "improved" cost-reduced version 
using mechanical filters designated R-390A.  Boatanchor folks often at 
the "non-A" to differentiate.  Google will give you more than you want 
to know.
