Bob,
There are two models of what the great unwashed sloppily call 390's, the
R-390/URR and the R-390A/URR. Despite the fact that the front panels are similar,
there are numerous and significant mechanical and electrical differences
between them.
In self defence, those who know the difference fell into the habit of tacking
on the "non A" to make sure that anyone else who knew the difference would
know that they were talking about the rather scarce early model and not one of
the millions of R-390A's.
