[Boatanchors] off-topic: Batteries for a UPS

I don't know about the smaller "home" units, however my employer had several
5kW UPS units which had both an internal battery, an auxiliary battery pack
cabinet and were also connected to a rack of about one and a half tons of
batteries. It worked fine.

We also had a 3 kW version of the same unit. When it was called upon for
extended duty that it was not originally planned to do, the vendor suggested
we add a smaller external battery rack similar to that of the 5 kW unit.
This was done and all went well, even when we were finally called upon to
run from it. No problems until we turned the line power back on and it
began to charge. At this point the black smoke seals broke and let all the
stored internal black smoke out. No one was ever able to get all that black
smoke back into the unit - it was scrapped. Seems that all was fine except
it was not current limited on the charging side.

Perhaps unrelated to the question but who knows?

Gerry
