I know of no other Navy gear along those lines, but apparently the
term was applied to military gear earlier, no idea when. I have an old
British crystal receiver used in WWI by the artillery for spotting,
labeled 'Short Wave Tuner MKIII'. Tom Perera has one online:

"This British set is labeled: SHORT WAVE TUNER, MARK III, No. 4350,
A.T.M.Co. Ltd. 1918. It has a pocket watch mounted inside the top
lid."

Those RALs are a nice rig, very well made and quite pleasing to listen
to. I have the RAK companion and control box, someday I may even find
a decent RAL to go with it!
