Hi 

I used an RA-1B back in the 70's - never had problems with BFO. I added adjustable regeneration in the IF -- which which improved seltectivty 

I would suggest checking capactors(unsoldering one end - putting in a substitute) in the BFO circuit - a leaky (bypass) cap in the plate-sg circuit could be the cause. I have the handbook on my hd.
