In recent visite to Home Depot, I discovered that the larger stores now have
additional unusual hardware squirreled away in drawers in the hardware
department. There are spacers, threaded stock, double threaded stock with half of the
stock being threaded in one direction and half in the other and much more.
Don't bother asking the sales staff because the majority of them will hagve no
idea what you are talking about. Just take some time and carefully explore
the entire department. You may be surprised what you find. For that matter, if
you are fortunate enough to have a "Mom and Pop" hardware store in your area,
they often stock things you will never find elsewhere.
On soldering aluminum, I have seen demonstrations at hamfests, home shows and
flea markets of a product that will allow aluminum repairs. It comes in
sitcks and looks like solder except larger in diameter. The demonstration includes
soldering cans, propellers, bar stock, engine blocks and much more. Look for
this stuff the nest time you visit any of these venues. It appears to work
well. I bought some to have on hand, but have yet to need it. I guess when you
are prepeared, you never do.
