[Boatanchors] Mystery Part: A coil thingy

Ok, here is a little thing that I found in some inherited parts.

It is a hollow ceramic coil form with two windings on it.
Varnished,  One of the coils has an adjustable iron slug.
It looks like it mounts horizontally.

The numbers on one end are not very readable in the picture:
N17-T  -8?055-  5806   (square DofD? stamp)
Numbers on the other end say: C2045137-3

I would like to know what it is, just for curiosity.
And, unless it's going to set me up in retirement...
I'll ship it to whoever needs it.
