There are two main drivers for the 2A3 price. By far the largest are people
in the high end audio fools.... er fans clan that are after them. Many end
up in Asia with those there pursuing early high end audio. These are the
folks that bought early Monster Cable and other similar items. There appears
to be a mystique about 2A3 amps. Notice you can still purchase brand new
2A3 designed amps and kits on the net. As an engineer, I won't insult you
with the claims made about 2A3 amps.
There is also a larger mystique about the single plate version (as opposed
to the more common double plate version) which brings outlandish prices.
The high end audio folks even pay more for certain brands because they
"sound better".
The other much smaller group is folks like myself that collect and restore
the high end radios of the 1930s (E.H. Scott one of the larger groups). I
have one Scott radio that uses a dozen of them on three chassis and totally
my radios have approaching 50 deployed in the collection.
