Also, if you look in the vintage ham and ARRL manuals you will find chapters
associated with "construction practices."
Methods of making holes for tubes, transmformers etc are described that do not
use punches.
Of course punches are very quick and clean. But some homebrew gear built with a
great deal of patience can look great.
Look at the tools described in those chapters about building. The tools listed
are few and very simple .
But it does take patience and practice. So work on putting tube socket holes
in baking tins etc. You will undoubtedly make a mess the first couple of
times.
Like any skill it just takes practice.
