Hi Gary & Tony,
Your story reminded me of a time some 25 years ago, when a Ham buddy of
mine --- whose nickname was "Bilko" (if you're familiar with that TV
character's personality, you'll know exactly what kind of a guy he was!)
--- got wind of the fact that a transmatch was for sale at the local
surplus emporium...only trouble was, "Bilko" owed said owner of the
emporium some doe-ray-me, & as a result did NOT want to step foot on the
premises for fear of being tapped for monies pending...
So what's he do, but commission ANOTHER hapless pal of his to go into the
place & buy it on his behalf, on the Q-T --- and at a premium price, too,
I might add. Well, "Bilko" finally receives the long-awaited treasure that
he hopes he might be able to parley into a quick & easy (and profitable)
"flip" sale...but guess what?
It was a cheap, low-powered, and poorly-constructed transmatch that
"Bilko" himself had homebrewed some 5-6 years previously!!! It wasn't even
built on a metal chassis --- it was a square chunk of unfinished plywood!
We all got a big laugh at his expense, & nicknamed his newly re-acquired
piece of hardware, "...the boomerang transmatch" --- and the name "Bilko"
stuck to the guy (with affection, of course), right up until he became an
SK some 8 years ago...
