Here is the Washington Post article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&contentId=A61971-2003Feb24&notFound=true

(Hmm. That one might require a free subscription. Sorry)

And here's one from space.com

http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/fl_shuttle_020520.html

I got these by doing a Google search for "space shuttle computer chips ebay"

geeks.com identifies the part as an Intel 8086:

http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2002may/chi20020514011664.htm

Here's the San Francisco Chronicle about the same issue:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/05/12/MN141658.DTL&type=tech

None mentioned the Z80 chip, so I probably have that mixed up, but they do
mention 8" floppy drives(!)
