Hi Group,
We all consider a tube rig to be a boatanchor (tubes only and
tube/transistor hybrids like a Tempo 2020, or a set of Drake Twins) I
would like to include the solid state rigs that the manufacturer no
longer stocks replacement parts for, or any rig that is more than 25
years old. The newest rig in my shack is an IC-751A, and I consider it
a "classic" rig on its way to being a boatanchor as ICOM stocks less
and less parts for it as the years go by. Anyway, as you talk to
several different fellow hams, you'll get as many definitions of what
a boatanchor "really is". In my opinion, any rig that uses discrete
components IS a boatanchor, if it has any kind of an integrated
circuit in it, it probably isn't a boatanchor, but a "classic" rig.
Now I've really stuck my head into a hornet's nest, but these are
my opinions about what kind of radio qualifies as a boatanchor.
However, if a member of our boatanchor list asks questions about a rig
that may not qualify (by anybodies definition) as a boatanchor, we
shouldn't blow him/her out of the water, as some out of topic
questions have been asked here before (actually, a lot of them).
Tolerance, my friends, goes a long way to producing goodwill amongst
all of us. Have a good day!
