I'm certainly not going to claim superiority of the NC-400 over the R-390A! Not even equality. But I must say that I've been pleasantly surprised by my NC-400.
I acquired mine several years ago simply because of its novelty. Mine is one of the apparent few that weren't acquired new by the FBI and rack-mounted back when J. Edgar's outfit maintained an HF net. Mine came with factory cabinet and had seen light service in a private individual's shack.
It saw even lighter service in my shack at first, until a couple of my favorite general-coverage receivers were benched with problems. I hooked up the NC-400 and was surprised to find that it's a decent band-cruiser -- quite sensitive, reasonably stable and sufficiently selective.
All I'm saying, however, is that the NC-400 actually is capable of serving as more than a shelf queen in a vintage collection. Not a world-beater, but not a dud, either.

receivers mechanically stable. Other than for their rarity, the command
$$$ for them should have nothing to do with their overall performance. A
poorly running R390A, that's been out in the rain for a year, would run
rings around this receiver.
You asked, "Why go to Dayton, I ask"
We go for the thrill of beating the odds for rain, among other things.
Unfortunately, I had to pass on Butler this year due to a scheduling
conflict. Maybe in September.
