That would be spectacularly sturdy. I've got 3 benches, each 8' long
and 34" deep, made out of 2x4's. If I've got a bunch of R-390A's
in the middle and climb on the table too, then there is some flex, but
not much...

I've done them like that in the past, but lately I prefer those
stamped/bent sheet-metal fasteners.  The brand I get locally are "Simpson
Strong-Tite". Work great for the corners in particular. Some sort
of cross or diagonal brace does definitely help!
