Hi, Bob.  

My bench top is 3/4 plywood with 1/4 tempered Masonite(r) on top.

The basic structure is a 2x4 frame with the plywood glued & screwed 
to the frame.

On top of that is the Masonite.  It's held down with flat-head woodscrews
in 4 lines going from front to back.  This way, it can easily be replaced.
The screw heads are recessed below the surface of the Masonite.

Along the edges of the worksurface, I put a banding of 1" x 1/4" cedar 
strips to "pretty it up" and eliminate splinters.
