[Boatanchors] Need Design Ideas for Test Bench Construction

While we're on the subject, I need to re-do the top of my workbench.  I built 
it some 20 years ago of 3/4" AD plywood, 2/4's and steel legs.  Over the 
years, boatanchors have scarred up the top pretty badly in the most often used 
area, to the point where for the past couple of years, I get a splinter in a 
finger every now and again.  I'm considering what the best overlay repair surface 
would be and am open to suggestions.  If I go with tempered hardboard, what 
seems to be the preferred method of attaching it to the underlying plywood?  
Glue presumable but what kind?  Elmers Woodworkers or equivalent?  My bench is 
about 20' long in one straight run.  What's the best way in which to treat the 
front edge and the seams between the 8' sheets of hardboard?
