Just a guess, but perhaps C38 is "wound too tight" and injecting too
much BFO signal into the grid of V4..?
Actually S6 applied B+ to the BFO, V5. The BFO signal is coupled to the
grid of V4 via C38, a twisted wire "gimmick" capacitor.
