I have just finished reading all of the posts about soldering and
desoldering and I am really amazed!
For the life of my I can not figure out why in the world would anyone spend
over $250 for soldering equipment unless you have a business that requires
the newest and best available.
I have been working on electronic equipment for over fifty years now and
have used various large irons and guns and only recently bought a solder
sucker - the kind with a hollow tip and a squeeze ball - (Maybe $15 at RS).
I have had a small red squeeze ball with a Teflon tip for years.
I have used solder wick, or co-ax braid for most of my desoldering needs and
the 'sucker' for PCB work.
I have always used my Weller gun for PL-259's and have never had a problem -
it just takes a little practice and patience!
Eugene, if a lot of your work is going to be on boatanchors, a plain old
Weller gun with some solder wick will do a fine job; you just need to learn
how to do it correctly.
This is just the rambling of a old fart that has been hamming for over 50
years and has "Been there"

P.S. I have gotten to know where the parts are in my local RS store and when
I walk in and the ask if I need help, I tell them no thanks, I can help
myself; just yesterday, the manager of my local store did not know what a
1/4'' phone jax was! THE MANAGER!!
