Far better ugly than dead. If no way to easily keep the original power
connection scheme while making it safe (safety ground lead to chassis) then
I will pursue a safer option. I have been considering filing out the
connector hole on the rear apron of the chassis and installing an IEC type
connector/filter (which includes the ground).

In some respects, yes. But at least I'm not trying to retrofit a 3TF7
ballastube to the radio :-).

The example I'm working with, a JX-17, has a 2-pin threaded metal shell type
socket connector mounted to the rear of the chassis. That is the only power
inlet to the radio.

I have the original mating plug which has a threaded metal lockring to mate
with the chassis mounted socket. The plug has 2 screws holding together the
2 halves of its shell.  It also has 2 screws for the integral cable clamp;
that is what I meant by "strain relief".

The chassis-mounted connector "socket" has 2 male pins. The cord-mounted
connector "plug" has 2 female contacts.

There.  Enough flypepper for today.
