I had the same experience, also with a piece of
Collins gear.

I did the research and informed the seller and
he still insisted on selling it for his low
asking price.

In another case I negotiated a price midway between
the original uninformed low price and an informed
high price.

My budget was not seriously harmed and neither
was my integrity.

I learned this from other Hams of sound character
on several occasions over several decades -- dealing
fairly with one another is one of the special things
about the Amateur Radio family.
