Hi Bill,

If you put the caps in series, you will half the capacitance and double the
voltage rating. If you put them in parallel, you will double the capacitance
and half the voltage rating.

The problem is that the only way you can do what you are talking about is to
isolate one of the cans from ground and then you will have to cover it because
the exposed can will have HV on it. This is not good practice if it can be
avoided, although it is done all the time. That is why you see those cans
mounted on a bakelite wafer with a cardboard cover in the can itself.

My suggestion is to cut one of the bad caps loose and leave it mounted for
cosmetic purposes, then mount one of the dual sections where the other bad cap
is and wire it acccording to the circuit. Cut the terminals off the bad cap
that is left on the chassis so that if the unit is sold and needs service, what
you have done will be obvious to the next owner.

I am curently recapping a P-2000 supply for the SR-2000. Talk about
fun......!

Remember to keep one hand in your pocket and teach your kids that when they
dial 911, they should tell the dispatcher right off that this is no drill!
