Only thing I will add to this is that it is easier to add a product
detector to the R-388 than to the R-390A.  One reason is that the
388 doesn't have those removable modules, so you don't need extra
connector pins to run extra wires from the front panel switch to the
vicinity of the product detector.  There is also a mod where you put
a single mechanical filter in place of or in addition to the crystal
filter.
