[Boatanchors] 51J's vs R-338's?

I owned an R-388 quite a few years ago. One of the most worthwhile changes I made
was the addition of a Central Electronics Model "B" SSB 'slicer'. It made a great
improvement in using the receiver on SSB and CW. Most R-388's and 51J's I have seen
have "drifty" BFO oscillators! (Which isn't needed aith the "slicer".) The Model "B"
slicer was designed for 455 khz. but will retune and align very easily on 500 Khz.
The BIG difference in the 51J-4 is simply a modules that takes the place on an IF
stage. The only external difference is the three position filter selector switch
that is concentric with the existing BFO pitch capacitor shaft. The 51J-4
STILL has the same "drifty" BFO!
In my opinion, if you HAVE TO HAVE a "51J" receiver, get the R-388 or 51J-3
and add the Central Electronics model B SSB slicer. Feed the IF output of the receiver into
the model B and some means of breaking the audio path must be implemented in the
R-388. I used a pair of BNC jacks mounted on the rear chassis lip. RCA phono type
connectors will do the job well too.

| Hi there. Is it my imagination or do 51J-4's go for more money (on upay) than R-388's? I
understand them to be the same receiver, but seems on ebay if they say 51J they go for more
money...?

| Anyone ever put a product detector in a R-388? How does that set up compare to a 75A-3 with
product detector or 75A4?
|
| thanks!
