Ham Radio Mag had a Bill Orr article on replacing the 6BA6 BFO tube in
the 51J3 and replacing it with a 6BE6 and adding and changing a few
components to provide the BFO and product detector function. This change
was done to the R-388 that I have and it works very well. With it, you
don't have to ride the RF and audio gain controls all the time. There's
also a number of MC-1496 balanced modulator product detector circuits
floating around for various receivers that can be used in boatanchor
receivers.
