In the late 1970s, there was a newspaper strike in the UK and he wanted UK news
so I spent about $400 US for a RS 'Communications Receiver' with continuous
coverage from at least 500 KHz to 30 MHz. That was a LOT of money for me at the
time. This set was a knock-off of the Racals with an up conversion from HF to 50
or 70 MHz and then down conversion.
Frankly, I've NEVER seen another such a piece of junk anywhere else. The thing
was miserably unstable and had birdies to the point of being utterly useless.
(CHU was barely detectable) Since that time, I have not purchased anything
other than the occasional small part at RS.
Also, those that have griped that the sales people don't have a clue and are
never available, are wrong. True, they don't have a clue, but anytime I go into
a store at least one and often two of them try to sell me a damn Verizon cell
phone.
FWIW,
-John
