During the 1960s and into the 1970s Allied Radio (100
N. Western Avenue, Chicago, Illinois) started a chain
of retail stores just like Tandy's Radio Shack. In
the early 1970s Tandy bought out Allied. Some of the
Allied stores were "converted" to Radio Shack stores
and others, especially if located near an existing
Radio Shack store, were closed.
Not too long after Tandy bought Allied the Justice
Department of the United States government started
proceedings against Tandy for anti-trust violations.
To "settle" this, Tandy sold off the parts business
(now Allied Electronics). However, since the retail
stores had been either closed or turned into Radio
Shack stores nothing was done about them.
Radio Shack started in the Boston area as an amateur
radio dealership. Eventually that operation had
expanded into quite a few specialty stores dealing
with hi-fi, experimenters, as well as amateur radio.
Tandy Leather Company (out of Fort Worth, Texas) was
"looking for" a means of expanding their consumer
sales base and bought the Radio Shack stores.
Eventually Radio Shack was separated from its amateur
radio "roots" until it has become a battery, cellular
telephone, etc., that it is today.

Didn't that part of Tandy spin off from Allied
electronics? I remember Allieds big catalog that use
to be sent to the occasional purchaser. I know they
are still in business and I ordered a part from them
for my Weller type pencil gun soldering iron.
