If the tower is only going to support wire antennas it
should "self support" at 40 feet total. Motorola used
to sell lowband commercial systems that used a 60 foot
height of Rohn 25 tower with a single house bracket.
However, they did put in a yard of concrete at the
base. There was 3 square feet of antenna on top of
the tower.
My "short tower" is 40 feet of Rohn 25 house bracketed
at about 8 feet above ground and it has a 7 element 2
meter yagi, an 11 element 222 MHz yagi, and a 3
element 6 meter yagi (on top to clear the trees). The
tower has been up over 30 years and is still going
strong. The base on this tower is a flat plate that
is secured into the ground with 3 pipes about 4 feet
long. You can see a photo of this tower on the K9STH
website the URL of which is listed at the end of this
message.
I would consider putting a second bracket near the
bottom of the tower as well as securing the base very
well.
Since the tower is made from aluminum and is used I
wouldn't use it for anything but wire antennas.
Aluminum towers tend to be considerably weaker than
high quality steel towers like those made by Rohn.
I definitely agree with putting pulleys on the tower
to raise and lower the wire antennas. This way you
would not have to climb the tower. It is going to
"sway" especially when you climb it. When a tower
sways every inch that it actually moves feels like at
least a foot when you are on top of the tower!
