I guess 1616's are mercury vapor rectifiers?  These are sometimes prone to a 
form of oscillation (called 'hash').  This is cured by putting RF chokes in the 
plate leads (called 'hash chokes', of course!).  Someone here will be able to 
tell you the appropriate inductance for a hash choke.
