Spend enought time walking around the store and you can find ready-made
pieces that come together without too much work. *If* you can fend off the
"helpful" clerks that long.

"Uh-oh" - my new job is for a state agency!

Exactly - had lots of nice tapped holes already in place, and some
significant mass for better "feel".

That's a great idea... A friend of mine has a commercial dipole made from
tape measure tapes in a twin roll center assembly - I think it is from B&W. It
is marked in frequency or bands rather than inches and feet. But one could
homebrew one by mounting two tape measures on a center insulator of some kind
and connect the feedline to them for the two legs of the dipole.

Thinking about that I just realized I should have used a wooden or plastic
drawer/cabinet knob for the finger rest. The large cable lug is "swagged" on,
and I like the added mass it provides, but maybe I can find a way to mount the
knob on it for nicer look and touch.
