Spend enought time walking around the store and you can find ready-made 
pieces that come together without too much work.  *If* you can fend off the 
"helpful" clerks that long.

Exactly - had lots of nice tapped holes already in place, and some 
significant mass for better "feel".

That's a great idea...  A friend of mine has a commercial dipole made from 
tape measure tapes in a twin roll center assembly - I think it is from B&W.  It 
is marked in frequency or bands rather than inches and feet.  But one could 
homebrew one by mounting two tape measures on a center insulator of some kind 
and connect the feedline to them for the two legs of the dipole.

Thinking about that I just realized I should have used a wooden or plastic 
drawer/cabinet knob for the finger rest.  The large cable lug is "swagged" on, 
and I like the added mass it provides, but maybe I can find a way to mount the 
knob on it for nicer look and touch.
