Ah yes, the LA-36. I still have one and it still works. A real workhorse,  
but slow as all getout. In addition, it was a 7-pin dot matrix, which had no  
descenders for lower case. (Example, p,q,y, etc. were all raised  slightly.)
 
A company named Datasouth started their business by making a replacement  
logic board for the LA-36, that sped it up by a factor of four, and added lots  
of extra features. Couldn't fix the basic font though.
 
I drag mine out once in a while just to hear that nostalgic high speed dot  
matrix sound. zzzzzzzzzzt! zzzzzzzzzt!
