Thanks for correcting that, Gary. You're absolutely right. Depending on a
ground wire current as a trip mechanism would not be certain protection at
all. If some return current gets into the ground lead, the GFI will trip
but only because the hot-neutral balance is upset. Somehow over time I had
distorted that info into a recollection that the ground was being sensed.
