Barrie and Phil,
Actually, there are five models of the R-274/URR, R-274 through R-274D, in
three groups. R-274 and R-274D, R-274A and R-274C, and R-274B. Made, in order,
by Hallicrafters, Hammarlund, and Hammarlund. It isn't at all unusual for
later models of a piece of War Department, Navy Department, or DOD electronic
equipment to be made by a contractor other than the one who originally designed
and built it, but this is one of the few instances where additional equipment
was ordered under the same nomenclature but only required to meet the broad
specifications in the original RFQ. Outside of any coincidental tubes used in
common, the only things that the first group has in common with the second and
third are physical size and frequency coverage.
With apologies to Duane, this three blind men and the elephant discussion
about R-274(*)'s gets started on one of the boatanchors/military radio related
lists about every 13.5 months.
