Bill, a couple of givens 'n' druthers might help.  What 'vintage' are we 
talking about?  To me that might be a '48 Du Mont, to you ...

And how basic?  Do you want to struggle with recurrent sweep or go 
modern enough for triggered sweep?  How much bandwidth?  Tubes or 
sand-state?  (A maintenance factor.)  Brand preferences?  Service grade 
or lab grade?  And I would really suggest dual-trace but it's up to you.

Scope first, then probe(s), but as long as you're talking about a 
standard 1 Meg Zin there are tons of good used Tek probes out there and 
no good reason to not use them.
