[Boatanchors] Cold Heat

John (and all)

I purchased a rechargeable soldering pencil with changeable plug in tips back in
1978. I still have it and it still works. It is also the original battery!

It has a charger base the unit sits in. If I recall correctly, it takes about
one hour for a full charge on the battery. Battery in use life is about twenty
minutes. It has a small bulb that focuses light on the point also.

You depress the power button and rotate it using your thumb right or left of
center to unlock the unit. Then just press and hold the button down.

It heats up to soldering temperature in two seconds. It takes only a minute or
so to be totally cool after being used.

It does a great job!

It is meant for fine soldering work, not general repairs around the house,
however. The points that come with it are like a needle, larger diameter needle,
blunt tip like a flat blade screwdriver and an angled point.

The one being advertised on TV sounds like it is for larger jobs than this one.

While it is ideal for a totally blind person who is goofy enough to want to
solder things, it is also safe for you sighted guys! (chuckle) If we have any
blind, or sight restricted subscribers who need to solder, you can put the tip
on the item to be soldered, use a fingertip to position the solder and then
remove the finger and press the power button with your thumb on the hand holding
the unit.

I will need to get somebody sighted to check to see who made this, but I think
it was Black and Decker.

I wonder, is what I described anything like the one being shown on TV?

<< RadioShack now handles such a soldering iron. >>

I doubt you are going to have to worry about it for long, so you had better
get yours now. If this goes the way of the long touted GPS receiver for
laptops, you will be lucky if they don't withdraw it from the market by the
first of
the year!

RS: "You've got questions," we can't answer!
