Mike,

The 6BG6 is indeed an octal version (sort of) of the 807. Gates used them as 
driver tubes for a few years in their broadcast band transmitters but 
eventually went back 807's.

They were originally used for television sweep tubes. They are more like a 
6L6 with the plate lead coming out of the top so that they could withstand 
the momentary high voltage in the sweep circuit.

On the matter of the 837:

The 837 was used as an oscillator tube. It has moderate power output but 
relatively high plate resistance which, in ECO oscillator service means that 
it is not as sensitive to changing loads as an 807 type tube is.
