[Boatanchors] Solder

Hello,
I don't know about the USA, but the EU is going lead free in 2005. I'm
currently working on an automotive electronics application for a supplier in
Germany. First prototypes can use lead solder, but any equipment for later
use must be completely lead free.
This poses a whole new set of problems as the lead free solder is brittle in
comparison to its 'unsafe' predecessor. A real nightmare for engine
compartment electronics.
There will be a big reliability hit for a few years until everyone has
enough experience working with these solders.
I have enough of the good stuff to last me for the rest of my life. I doubt
if the EPA or anyone else will ban solder for non-commercial use, but let's
face it, if all commercial equipment goes lead free then the Kesters of the
world will stop making good ol 63Pb37Sn.

Paul, W9MEH
