I believe there might be some info on this topic in one or two submarine
books which I've read. The problem is finding which one or two. A fellow
ham as well as a former Radar Technician 1st, W6SXA (Claude Conner) has an
excellent book out called "Nothing Friendly in the Vicinity" which gives
the life and times of his boat, the U.S.S. Guardfish. Ironically, Guardfish
was one of the earliest pacesetters of the war, (only she and Tang earned
two Presidential Unit Citations) but then fell under a cloud and was more or
less ostracized forever when she accidentally torpedoed and sank the U.S.S.
Extractor, a rescue ship. NPM and it's worn-out code sending apparatus
figured in this tragedy to a great extent, and in the following inquiry,
which is described in great detail by Conner.
Another place I might have seen the frequencies of NPM mentioned was the
late RADM Richard O'Kane's excellent "Clear the Bridge" and "Wahoo". I
remember reading somewhere that NPM broadcast on harmonics of it's
fundamental frequency, which I had in my head as being somewhere down around
4400 kcs. but DO NOT quote me on that as my memory is notorious for
transposing digits all around.
I'll try to see if I can track this down.
Wish me "good luck, good hunting..."

Tom
