Hi Bill,

I don't know this particular radio, and I'm just working 
from TM E11-227A.  The "bong" is typical old-fashioned-tube 
microphonics.  If you tap the tubes, it should get louder as 
you move from the UZ133D audio amp back through the UF109A 
detector to the UF134 RF amp.  You should be able to hear 
the detector oscillate on a nearby receiver with the regen 
control turned up.  You can also touch the grid connection 
of each tube with your finger and listen for hum and noise.

Accouding to the TM there is a muting connection from the 
transmitter.  So it's possible you need a jumper to enable 
the receiver.  Do you have schematics?
