In response to the eagle on the beam problem, there used to be a product on 
the market called bird tanglefoot. It was basicallty a very sticky substance 
that you could use to coat an area where you didn't want birds landing.  They 
would land once and not come back.  It does no harm to the birds, but evidently, 
they don't like sticky plaases as landing sites. I think it is still 
available at high end garden stores.  I used to have broblems in my old house with 
them landing in droves on the gutters and messing up the patio with their 
droppings.  A day or 2 after applying Tanglefoot, they never returned.

Two problems with it, though: 1. You are going to have to get up there to put 
it in the elements, of course you can fix the damage while you are up there.  
2.  This stuff is sticky and will make future work on the beam a bit messy if 
you don't clean it off first.
