Steve,

Take a look at the NC-100/101 manual on BAMA.  The NC-81X is 
a stripped down AC/DC version of the 101X.  The manual 
explains the care and feeding of the crystal filter, etc. 
that should be essentially the same on your radio.

I wouldn't attempt to "align" the internal adjustments of 
the crystal filter until I really had a need to do so.  You 
should be able to get it going by proper adjustment of the 
SELECTIVITY and PHASING contrills as explained in the 101X 
manual.
