Steve,

Control to the right of the tuning knob is AUDIO GAIN and 
power switch.  Control to the left is RF GAIN and PLATE 
switch (Switch in series with the 25Z5 rectifier plates 
kills B+ to mute receiver).

I suspect you have a problem with the phone jack which 
intrrupts the 25L6 grid circuit when phones are plugged in. 
  Exercise the jack.

There's a schematic and parts list on BAMA under NC-80.  The 
usual guys will sell you a manual.

Recommend you recap a radio this old.
