Thanks for all the responses. I did some checking, and others may be
interested in my findings:
<http://www.tequipment.net/>http://www.tequipment.net Has a good
description of Hakko desoldering stations. Search for Hakko desoldering
then click on Hakko desoldering equipment.
The 470B is discontinued, but there is still a good description. The 472
appears to be similar to the 470B (but I didn't compare each spec). It is
discontinued too, but is replaced by the 473, which costs about $500. These
have a separate "station" which contains the vacuum pump and the
"handpiece". The 470B handpiece has a 50 watt heater, and overall power
consumption is 110 watts. The 473 handpiece has a 60 watt heater, and
overall power consumption is 80 watts
The 808 is a single unit that roughly resembles a soldering gun, and costs
$175 at Telequipment. Overall power consumption is 70 watts. Heater power
is not listed, but the motor uses 6.5 watts. Fry's Outpost.com
http://shop3.outpost.com/product/2760813#detailed lists the 808 for
$159.99, but none are in stock. Action Electronics has a half price sale
at $199.95. Such a deal! Kiesub http://www.kiesub.com/ (search for solder
stations and tips) seems to have the best 808 price and availability. The
808 costs $159.95 (normally in stock), and the 472 costs $519.95 ( normally
in stock). The 473 isn't listed.
ebay currently lists none of the above.
http://www.n0ss.net/hakko_808_notes.pdf has much 808 information, including
useful accessories to get with your initial purchase.
Go to http://www.ac6rm.net/mailarchive/html/elecraft-list/ and search for
Hakko 808 for more info.
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2978 has a number of positive reviews
and a little info.
