hi agn Phil,
As I'm sure you are aware, the BC-1004 is pretty much the same as the
BC-779, -774, and R-129, (SP-200 series) except for band coverage.
Probably closest to the BC-779 where it's only different in the lowest 2
bands' freq. coverage, 540 - 1160kc, and 1160 - 2500kc for the 1004 vs
100 - 200kc and 200 -400kc in the 779.
They're covered in T.O. 31R1-3BC779-1 (TM11-866), which is avaliable
for free download on The Hammarlund Historian website's "Manual" section.
(thanks to John, K5MO, for the scanning chores)
There's also a reburbishment page on the BC-779 in the "Service"
section. I don't remember any particular "gotchas" in it, but all the
paper caps will need to be replaced, and check the bleeder/dropping
resistors in teh power supply. It is a very nice operating receiver when
done.

I don't know why there might be a reason to change the HFO from a 6J7
to a 6C4 other than to update or go miniature. There was a long article
in QST back in the 50's or early 60's that went thru a complete re-tube
and redesign to "modernize" these rcvrs. THat may be where the swap came
from. I have a copy, & can send you a copy it you'd like. I don't think
it's on the website due to copyright worries.
We'll all be interested in the account of your progress as you get
into it.

Al, W8UT
