The S-85, S-40B, SX-96, SX-100 and virtually all of the
main/bandspread radios of the same ilk are just plain drifty. It's the
nature of the beast. The HQ-180, HQ-145, HQ-whatever, GPR-xx, you
name it, suffer from the same issues. Some are better than others, but
they're all bad .. on a relative basis.
You simply can't compare these receivers with radios that have crystal
controlled first conversion, with a low frequency PTO or CTO that is
designed for much better stability. It isn't a valid comparison.
Which isn't to say that "two dial" radios are bad news. They simply are
what they are. Many (if not most) of them are wonderful, even with the
drift :-)
