Hi all,
I'm trying to get info on my first 'real' rig from some time ago.
Before becoming a novice, my Elmer gave me an old Hunter CW
transmitter. It looked a bit like a Collins design, with a large knob
in the center of the front for VFO, CW only, two 6146s, internal
power supply, and a lid which hinged up. It was gray wrinkle
finished. I believe there was a 3 position switch with a black knob,
for standby, spot and transmit. I first used the thing as a BFO, in
spot mode injecting a signal into the old Stromberg Carlson AM
BCB/SWL radio I used for code practice. Using it as a BFO let me copy
CW and to my utter amazement, SSB.
After getting my novice, I used it as a power supply for a homebrew
CW rig until I got my General. Then I used it on CW at full power
with a Drake 2B and the combo was marvelous. I tried to plate
modulate the thing for AM using a powerful PA amp and an output
transformer backwards and that worked, sort of.
I never had a manual on it and stopped using it when a wire popped
off in the matching network and I never got the thing working again.
The part number *may* have been something like CM30, CM40, TM240 or
some permutation. Been over 30 years. Very well made rig. Served me
well, hundreds of pleasant hours after finishing farm chores and
homework. Sometimes before homework, but always after farm chores!
Would anyone recall this friendly little transmitter, and be able to
share any details on it? If I had the part number I could Google it,
but I don't remember that. I'd love to reminisce.
