Hi guys ..

Actually, I suspect Al and I are in the same age group.  I remember them
from the 50's also.  Probably more variable than regional.  Right after
that post I thought maybe they were also called "Chinese handcuffs" or
"fingertraps".  They used to be sold along with that variety of cheap
magic tricks in stores and on the back pages of comic books.  Maybe we
called them Mexican because the "Made in Mexico" stamp was there long
after the box was tossed.  Nowadays, if they still make them, they
probably come from China.

So much for the off-topicness (sorry) ...

Yes, Miguel, the wire tube pullers will scratch whatever is left of the
painted labeling on a tube -- if the tube shield doesn't get it first. 
Maybe I'll start lining my tube pullers with tape. ;-)

There's another type of tube puller that's better than the mesh ones in
tight, buried places.  Don't know if they still make them, but GC used to
have a tongs type with rubber-dipped curved ends.  I've seen the same
thing labeled as PC board tongs -- for etching your own.
