If you can't come up with a 6BS8, the old 6BQ7 works
fine. Also, the ambient noise on 6 meters in most
locations is such that the "improved" noise figure of
any particular tube is not really usable.
I have had a home brew equivalent of the CB-6 for well
over 40 years that was originally built by K9RMJ and
it still works fine. Also have a couple of "real"
CB-6 converters and they work fine as well.
The CB-6 converters work very well and are easy to
align. In terms of things like front-end overload,
intermodulation, etc., the CB-6 with its tube type
r.f. amplifier does a better job than the vast
majority of the solid-state converters. This
over-load, etc., difference is especially noticeable
in areas that have a Channel 2 television transmitter
relatively near by.
The old 2 meter version, CB-2 is also an excellent
"middle of the road" converter. I have at least a
half-dozen of them around (I'm sort of a "computer
junkie" having acquired over 30 converters of various
configurations for 6 meters, 2 meters, 1.25 meters,
and 70 cm over the years).

My Ameco 6m converter has a 6BS8 cascode rf amp. Is
this the best dual triode to use without major
modification?
How will the Ameco compare to todays NE602 IC converters?
